GENEVIEVE MAE YOUNG

Genevieve Mae (Ulmer) Young, 94, of Humboldt, passed away on Nov. 15, 2016 at Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt. She born on Feb. 8, 1922 to Nelson H. and Cecelia (Smith) Ulmer.

She attended Dawson Public School and following graduation in 1940, she was employed as secretary to the Superintendent of the Dawson School for two years. In May 1942 she went to Washington, D.C., as clerk typist employed with the Casualty Dept. of the Army, Adjutant Generals Office. After five years, she left government service as statistical draftsman.

On Sept. 13, 1946, Genevieve married Herbert Lee Young at his parent’s home in Washington, D.C.  They lived in the Congress Heights area where their three sons were born. In Sept. 1958 they moved to Temple Hills, MD. After Herbert retired on Dec. 31, 1973, they moved to Humboldt in August 1974. They were married almost 54 years when Herbert died in 2000. In April 2006, Genevieve moved into Colonial Acres.

A year after moving to Humboldt, she became a member of the Berean Church and later the Auburn Berean Church and the Auburn Evangelical Free Church. Genevieve was most recently a member of the Falls City Baptist Church. She had been a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, VFW Auxiliary, and AARP, as well as the Dawson Goldenrod Club, Busy Hour Club, Nebraska City Heritage Needlework Guild, the National Quilting Association and a charter member of the Nebraska State Quilt Guild. The Pennsylvania Colony was very important to her.

Genevieve enjoyed gardening, crafts, sewing, quilting, and bingo.  

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herbert; eldest son, Ray in 2005; and an infant sister.  

Genevieve is survived by her sons, Charles E. “Chuck” (Debbi) Young, of Pasadena, CA, and Wayne C. (Dee) Young, of Paola, KS; grandchildren, Darlene and L.B. Chandler, of Ventura, CA, Crystal and Brett Hammans, of Oxnard, CA, and Barrett Young, of Paola; great-grandchildren include L.J. and Zeke Chandler and Baby Hammas; a sister, Dolores “Dee” (Ted) Chapman, of Arcadia, CA; daughter-in-law Nancy Goudie, of San Francisco, CA; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016 at Wherry Mortuary in Humboldt, with Pastor Ron Russell officiating. Interment at the Heim Cemetery in Dawson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Pennsylvania Colony Historical Society of Nebraska, c/o Daniel Pleiss, 14721 Laurel Plaza, Omaha, NE 68116.
