Kenneth Wayne Shurtleff

Kenneth Wayne Shurtleff, 64, passed away on January 31, 2018 after a long battle with lung cancer and COPD. He was born in Falls City, on February 7, 1953, the only son of Wayne Shurtleff and Rose Parker Shurtleff. Kenny graduated from Falls City High School with the class of 1971.

He enlisted in the US Marines on August 2, 1971 at Omaha. He earned a National Defense Service Medal, Pistol Sharpshooter Badge, Rifle Sharpshooter Badge, Letter of Commendation and a Good Conduct Medal with 1 Star. He was honorably discharged on June 14, 1977 at Lansing, MI. He married Barbara Vollmer on September 27, 1986 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Falls City.

The couple have one son, Derek James Shurtleff, of Falls City. The Shurtleff family lived in Lincoln, and Milford, NE and currently reside in Falls City. Kenny worked in various jobs in Falls City and Lincoln, retiring from the United States Postal Service in Lincoln in 2013 after twenty plus years. Kenny was a member of the American Legion Post 0102. Kenny was a true Nebraska Husker fan, he enjoyed watching all types of sports but especially golf. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife and son; mother-in-law, Dorothy Vollmer; sisters, Jean Sailors, Mary and Rodney Wissmann, and Harriett Shurtleff all of Falls City; sister-in-law Leann and James Nelson, Aurora; brother-in-law, Tim Wood, North Platte; nieces and nephews; and many good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Sue Petsche, Annice Utecht, and Carol Shurtleff; father-in-law, Harold Vollmer; and sister-in-law, Lynett Wood.

Visitation was from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 4, 2018 at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home, 2303 Harlan St, Falls City. Funeral services were scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 5, 2018 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, six mi. North of Falls City with Reverend Daniel Gifford officiating.

Interment will be in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. Military graveside honors by Falls City Ceremonial Honor Guard.
