Falls City High junior Lee Huettner jumped his way to a first and second place finish in the triple and long jump events at Friday’s season-opening Ashland-Greenwood Invitational.
Huettner finished with a 42-foot, 3 1/2 inch triple jump and was only one-quarter of an inch behind Platteview’s Seth Starks’ 20 feet, 11 1/4 inches for a first-place tie in the long jump. Huettner accounted for 18 of the Tigers 42 points, as FC finished fifth behind Lincoln Lutheran (42), Platteview (102), Syracuse (120) and first-place Gretna (123).
Senior Mitchell Harling, a state qualifier the last two years, was runner-up to Huettner in the triple jump with a distance of 40 feet, 5 1/4 inches, and finished fifth in the long jump at 19-feet even.
Another two-time qualifier, junior Zach Jordening, finished fourth in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 8 inches, while junior Jordy Stoller ran a time of 24.2 seconds in the 200-meter dash, good for fifth place.
FC’s 800-meter relay team of Anthony Baker, Brandon Gibson, Trenton Pentecost and Cody Schawang finished third (9:45.79), while the Tiger boys’ 400-meter relay team of Harling, Stoller, Jeremy Robinson and Zayne Heckenlively finished fifth (48.22).
Allyson Scholl scored six of the Lady Tigers 10 team points, as she took home a third-place finish in the triple jump with distance of 30 feet, one inch. Brittany Webster was fifth in the discus (85-10) and Krystal Samqua raced to a sixth-place finish in the 1600 meters.
The Lady Tigers 3200-meter relay team – comprised of Cheyenne Dovel, Lindsay Duerfeldt, Morgan Roberts and Brooke Scheitel – finished sixth with a time of 11:54.14.
Falls City hosts their invitational today at 4 p.m. on the Thomas Memorial Track at Jug Brown Stadium.
