Tiger golfers’ season ends at districts

Breezy and warm conditions, a bit of a rarity this spring, were the setting for Monday’s Class B-2 District Golf Tournament, held at the shark-themed Tiburon Golf Course – a Par-72, 7000-plus course – in west Omaha.

Falls City’s golfers, along with most of the players in the 12-team field, were shark-bitten by Tiburon, which features three nine-hole courses aptly named, “Mako,” “Hammerhead” and “Great White.”

The latter two courses were played Monday and only two players, sophomore Vance Jansen of Blair and Omaha Gross senior Matt Shukis, broke 80. Jansen was the top medalist with a 39-37–76, followed by Shukis’ 40-38–78.

Weston Witt was Falls City’s top performer with a 91. The sophomore went out with a 44 and came in with a 47 to finish in a five-way tie for 14th place. Weston’s older brother, Wade, wrapped up his career with a 94 (45-49). Collectively, the Tigers finished ninth with a score of 391. Other FC scores were sophomore Brody Weinmann, 101, senior Brandt Vice, 105, and senior Dakota Pentecost, 119.

Blair claimed the district title with a 344, followed by Omaha Skutt Catholic (349) and Omaha Gross Catholic (350). All three teams qualified for next week’s Class B State Tournament. Omaha Roncalli was not far behind with a 353. No other team scored lower than 376.

The top 10 individual medalists, who qualified for state regardless of their team’s finish, were: Tommy Hamilton, senior, Gross, 37-43–80; Brian Carmody, senior, Skutt, 43-39–82; Ryan Rearick, senior, Skutt, 41-41–82; Trayven Blex, senior, Auburn, 43-40–83; Collin Griffith, junior, Roncalli, 43-42–85; Sam Martin, sophomore, Elkhorn, 42-43–85; Travis Loudner, sophomore, Blair, 44-42–86; Grant Brown, sophomore, Roncalli, 45-43–88.

The Class B State Tourney is Tuesday, May 21 and Wednesday, May 22 starting at 9:30 a.m. both days. The venue is Jackrabbit Run in Grand Island.
