Ida Irene (Kanel) Gilbert

Ida Irene (Kanel) Gilbert, 88, of Humboldt, died Sunday, May 12, 2013, at Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt.

She was born on the family farm in rural DuBois on May 6, 1925, the daughter of Albert Clyde and Laura Velma (Pelton) Farwell. She attended grade school in DuBois and later graduated from DuBois High School with the class of 1943.

On Dec. 11, 1943, Ida was united in marriage to John Alfred Kanel in Hiawatha, KS. While John was serving his country, Ida and son, Dwaine, resided with her parents until John returned from service. Upon his return, the couple then spent their lives raising their family, feeding cattle and farming. They enjoyed many vacations traveling and visiting relatives around the country. John passed away in April of 1980.

Ida married Kenneth Gilbert in Table Rock in October of 1987. They lived on a farm south of Humboldt until her health declined and she became a resident of Colonial Acres Nursing Home in October of 2008. Ida was a member of the Four-Mile Congregational Church, south of Humboldt. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and made many items for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Dwaine (Kathy) Kanel, Linda (Jack) McNealy and Jay (Pat) Kanel, all of Humboldt, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, brothers, Roy (Kay) Farwell, DuBois, Richard (Doris) Farwell, DuBois, and Dean (Loree) Farwell, Seneca, KS, a sister-in-law, Nina (Kanel) Klaudt, Ft. Meyers, FL, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Ida was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, John A. Kanel and Kenneth Gilbert, a brother, Horace (Leola) Farwell, sisters, Margaret (Leon) Korber, Alberta (Howard) Koester, Lavinna (Fred) Thiemann, Laura (Lawrence) Meier and Jennie (Lyle) Boehner, a brother-in-law, Ernest Klaudt, and a granddaughter, Lisa (McNealy) Schaardt.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 16, at the Four-Mile Congregational Church, south of Humboldt. Pastor Ron Russell officiated. Visitation was May 15 at The Wherry Mortuary in Humboldt. Interment was at the Four-Mile Cemetery.
