Sacred Heart and Johnson-Brock to clash for Pioneer Conference title

Falls City Sacred Heart put together one of their best matches of the season Tuesday night at Humboldt in the semifinals of the Pioneer Conference volleyball tournament, as they held off Class D1 No. 5 Friend in a four-set victory, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22 and 25-15.

SH has now won nine out of their last ten games and lost just once in October. Friend, which fell to 22-4, entered Tuesday’s match on the heels of an eight-game winning streak.

The win puts the Class D2 sixth-ranked Lady Irish into Friday’s conference tourney championship against Johnson-Brock, who escaped with a victory in a five-set thriller over D2 No. 4 Sterling. J-B, which had lost all three previous matches this season against the Jets, dropped the first two sets, 14-25, 25-27, but rallied to win the final three, 25-23, 27-25 and 16-14.

SH (24-4) looks to end an 11-year conference championship drought Friday at 8 p.m. in Humboldt against defending champions J-B (17-9), a team SH is 3-0 against in 2013. The Lady Irish have finished runners-up five times (’09, ’07, ’06, ’05 and ’01), but shockingly, have not won a conference tournament since 2002 when defeated all-class eighth-ranked and previously unbeaten Freeman in straight sets. Their last appearance in the conference tournament finals was in 2009.
