Penny Diane Shafer was born to Max W. Shafer and Joanne (Vice) Shafer on January 1,1962 in the Falls City Community Medical Center. She was the first baby born in Falls City that year.
As she grew it was obvious, she liked animals especially horses. She would be on a pony every chance she got. Penny went to a one room school near Barada, later going to Southeast Consolidated in Stella. There she played all sports. She enjoyed volleyball and the newly started basketball team. In the summers Penny was on horses all the time. She went camping a lot with her parents, her brother Max and cousins, aunts and uncles. One very colorful uncle used to call her centavo, Spanish for Penny. Later on, Penny married Jerry Colglazier and divorced shortly afterward. A few years later she married Joe or (golden arm) Meche. Joe was a welder and said he could weld anything and there was a certain amount of truth to that.
Throughout her life Penny always had horses and continued to ride. Penny and Joe moved into her folks house northeast of Shubert and put up a corral for roping and barrel riding, she liked horse riding events a lot. Eventually Penny and Joe divorced with Penny staying on the farm with horses. She worked at nursing homes and several years at Cooper Nuclear Station in security. Penny worked at the nuclear plant until the fall of 2021 when her health started failing. She stayed on the farm with several horses including miniature horses and donkeys, a dog, and several cats, loving every minute of her life and fighting for every second of it. Penny lost that fight on Oct. 2, 2022 due to complications from cancer. She will be sorely missed.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Monday, October 10, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Prairie Union Cemetery.
