Falls City Sacred Heart senior quarterback Chaz Dunn accounted for six touchdowns – 3 rushing, 2 passing and a pick-6 – and helped lead the top-ranked Irish over visiting Humphrey St. Francis, 51-30, in a Class D2 quarterfinal matchup Tuesday night at Jug Brown Stadium.
Dunn and the Irish never trailed in the ballgame, then pulled away in the second half after leading 21-14 at the break. FCSH is now 11-0 and into the semifinals for the second-straight year. Update (Time announced for Monday’s semifinal): The top-ranked Irish travel to No. 3 Wynot Monday for a semifinal matchup and kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Wynot remained undefeated (11-0) after they came back in a thriller to defeat No. 2 Giltner 52-50 in their quarterfinal Tuesday at Giltner. Wynot trailed 52-38 with less than five minutes left to play, but stormed back and eventually converted the go-ahead 2-point conversion with only 14 seconds left in the game.
Dunn’s performance was exceptional, to say the least. He completed 28-of-32 pass attempts for 254 yards and two scores, rushed for three more and his 32-yard interception return for a TD with midway through the fourth quarter put FCSH ahead 44-22 and grounded the Flyers for good.
The Irish receiving corp made life easy on their quarterback and were led by senior Colin Niemeyer, who hauled in nine receptions for 106 yards. Junior Logan Scheitel finished with a game-high 11 receptions for 96 yards and a TD, while junior Austin Malone caught six passes for 30 yards and one TD. Sawyer Kean followed up his 300-plus yard rushing performance last week with another solid outing against a much stouter defense. The junior tailback rushed 18 times for 114 yards and a TD.
Sacred Heart’s defense held strong all night and were led by seniors Jarod Fiegener, Daniel Keithley and junior Zavan Kirkendall. (Defensive statistics were not yet available.) Senior linebacker and leading tackler Brandon Schawang left the game in the second quarter and did not return. The extent of his injury was not known.
Humphrey St. Francis was led by their work-horse running back, junior J.J. Oltmer, who carried 41 times for 173 yards and four TD’s.
The other Class D2 semifinal matchup is between tenth-ranked Amherst (10-1) and seventh-ranked Stuart (10-1). Amherst defeated previously unbeaten and the west bracket’s top seed, Wallace, 50-44, while Stuart thumped Medicine Valley 44-20 to advance to the semifinals.
The semifinal winners advance to the D2 State Championship Monday November 25 at 2:45 at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.
