OMMO DEJONGE

Ommo DeJonge, 90, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born on December 20, 1925, in Bloomington, Nebraska to Eibo and Elise (Schmidt) DeJonge.  Ommo was raised on the family farm near Hildreth, Nebraska where he attended country school.  On January 3, 1926, Ommo was baptized in Macon, Nebraska.  In 1936, Ommo’s family moved to rural Humboldt where he continued country school and was later confirmed at the St. James (Long Branch) Lutheran Church on September 14, 1941.  He later graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1945.  After graduating, Ommo enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during World War II from June 18, 1945 until being honorably discharged on November 20, 1946.

On November 19, 1950, Ommo was united in marriage to Marilyn Bucher in Humboldt, Nebraska.  To this union three boys, Leland, David, and Alan were born.  The couple raised their boys on a farm 10 miles north of Humboldt.  Ommo farmed and raised livestock until retiring in 1993 when he and Marilyn moved into town.  Ommo was a member of the Harvey-Mann Legion Post #269 and a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Humboldt where he served the church by holding various offices.  Ommo was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who devoted his life to his family.  He enjoyed farming, raising livestock, and spending time with family and friends.  Ommo also enjoyed working as a handy man while spending twenty-eight winters down in Harlingen, Texas.

Ommo passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2015, at the Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of ninety years and two days.  He was preceded in death by his parents, sons David and Leland DeJonge, a brother George DeJonge, daughter-in-law Deana DeJonge, brother-in-law Robert Bucher, sisters-in-law: Jannette Boring and her husband Clayton, Edna DeJonge, Emma Lee DeJonge, and Lucille DeJonge.

Ommo is survived by his loving wife Marilyn DeJonge of Humboldt, NE; son Alan DeJonge and his wife Joyce of Johnson, NE; grandson Brandon DeJonge and his wife Valerie of Juniata, NE; great-grandchildren Riley and Isabel DeJonge of Juniata, NE; brothers: Lammert DeJonge of Humboldt, NE; Ed DeJonge of Humboldt, NE; 5 step-grandchildren and their families; brothers-in-law: Gerald Bucher and his wife Shirley of Tuscan, AZ; Gary Bucher and his wife Lauralee of Auburn, NE; sisters-in-law: Betty Kistner and her husband Dwayne of Dawson, NE; Sherryn Rist and her husband Ron of Humboldt, NE; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. 

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 28, 2015, at The Faith Lutheran Church in Humboldt, Nebraska with Reverend Robert Schermbeck officiating.

Visitation will be from 12-8 p.m. on Sunday, December 27, 2015, at The Wherry Mortuary in Humboldt, Nebraska.  Family will greet friends from 4-6 p.m. at the mortuary.

Interment will be at the Humboldt Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Harvey-Mann Legion Post #269 and the Nebraska Funeral Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the family’s choice with a later designation.
