ROBERT E. SCHEMMEL

Robert E. Schemmel, age 92 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at Duff’s Friendship Villa in Nebraska City.
Robert “Bob” Schemmel was born on March 25, 1923 in Hooper, NE; the son of Henry E. and Lucille (Cooper) Schemmel.  His family moved to the Nebraska City area in 1934 .  He attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from the Nebraska City High School with the Class of 1940.
In 1941, he joined the United States Army/Air Force and proudly served his country during WWII.  He was honorably discharged on December 7, 1945.  He was a member of the Nebraska City American Legion.
In 1942, he was united in marriage to Margaret (Peg) Grimes and to this union two sons were born:  Gary E. and Robert M. (Bobby).  In 1949, Bob received his Bachelors degree from Peru State College and later received his Masters from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
Bob started his first teaching position at Salem, NE where he was superintendent, teacher, and coach of all sports, plus other assignments.  In 1956, he accepted an administrative position, along with teaching at Johnson, NE.  After seven years at Johnson, NE he taught math and science classes at Irving Junior High in Lincoln, NE for 12 years.  Bob retired from teaching in 1975 and moved his family to the Nebraska City area.
Two of Bob’s favorite pastimes were baseball and golf.  In his younger years he pitched and played first base for the Falls City baseball team.  He also dearly loved the game of golf and won many tournaments with his dear friend and neighbor, George Stukenholtz.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 73 years, Margaret (Peg) Schemmel of Nebraska City; son Gary and good friend Donna Bohling; granddaughters, Jody Eggert, Kelly Kreifel; great-grandchildren, Cody Eggert, Katelyn Eggert, Claire Kreifel and Morgan Kreifel; sisters-in-law, Janis Grimes, Rita Weber and Virginia Grimes; brother-in-law Roger Weber; nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his son Bobby on March 17, 2014 due to cancer; his parents; a sister Mary and a brother Douglas.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, 2015 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City with Fr. Stephen Cooney officiating.  Burial will follow at Camp Creek Cemetery south of Nebraska City with Military Honors conducted by the Nebraska National Guard Funeral Honors Detail.
Memorials may be given to Tabitha Hospice or Duff’s Friendship Villa in Nebr. City.
