FRED W. FREY

Fred William Frey, 80, of DuBois, died peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca, KS. He was born in rural Richardson County, the eldest son of Jake and Laura Yoesel Frey.  

His family spent his childhood on a farm south of Bern, KS. Fred graduated from Bern High School in 1952. From 1953-1957 he served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabees in Construction detail. He was stationed in the Philippines as well as Alaska. He then attended Kansas State University on the GI Bill and was an active member of the meat judging team. Fred graduated with a BS in Animal Science and moved back home to rural DuBois where he began his future in agriculture.

Fred married Alda Mae Tanking, of Seneca, on April 15, 1961. Fred enjoyed farming and livestock and was a past president of the Richardson County Farm Bureau.  He was an avid reader and enjoyed discussing world events and politics. He loved his five grandchildren and keeping up with their many activities. Fred was an active member of the Charles Fankhauser American Legion Post 326 and Sabetha VFW. He enjoyed helping with Veterans Day activities and parades and was honored to have served our country.

He had deep regard for our founding fathers and enjoyed an 80th birthday trip to Washington D.C. with his brother. Fred was a gentle man who would rather listen and observe than talk. His quiet spirit and soft heart will be remembered by all those who knew him.He loved his Maker and understood that his personal relationship with Him through Jesus wasn’t found in any specific denomination.

Fred is survived by his sons, Howard Frey, of Humboldt, Roy (Shari) Frey, of Sabetha; daughter, Cindy (Russ) Wilfert, of Mesa, AZ; siblings, John (Anne) Frey, of Minnesota, and Doris (Larry) Sher, of Shawnee, KS; five grandchildren, Jacqueline Frey, of Lawrence, KS, Jacob Frey, of Manhattan, KS, Broderick Frey, of Sabetha, Jenna and Caden Wilfert, of Mesa; and his dog, Katy; brother, John (Anne) Frey, of Mankato, MN; sister, Doris (Larry) Sher, of Shawnee, KS; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Fred’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014 at the Bern United Methodist Church, with Pastor Bill Driver officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at the Bern Community Building, where family will be greeting friends. Inurnment will be at the Bern Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Charles Fankhauser Legion Post 326 of Bern.
