Mary Katheryn (Peters) Horton passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the age of 90 in Sacramento, CA. Mary Kay was born Jan. 11, 1924 in Nowata, OK.
She is preceded in death by her parents John and Anita Peters, and her loving husband, Charles Raymond “Ray” Horton. Mary Kay is survived by her half-sister, Eowana Bradley Peters (Lenny Krieglen); sons, John (Loretta) Horton, and Dr. Richard Horton; daughter, Victoria Horton (Bernie Mikell); and grandson, Thomas Horton.
Mary Kay graduated from Falls City High School in 1941. Music, dance and the love of animals filled her heart. She was known for her stunning soprano voice and more than once cleared a dance floor.
She married Ray on Dec. 17, 1946. After 31 years, she retired from the University of Nebraska Press in October 1999. A mentor to many young women, Mary Kay encouraged them to be strong and independent like she taught her own daughter and sons to be. The family wishes to thank Evelyn Lamont and her family for the loving care they provided Mary Kay in the final years of her life.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at Wyuka Cemetery. Family and friends will gather at Wyuka Funeral Home prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mary Kay’s name to the University of Nebraska Foundation, 1010 Lincoln Mall, Suite 300, Lincoln, NE 68508.
