Irish boys edged by half-point at Lewiston

One-half of one point was all that kept the Falls City Sacred Heart boys’ from their fourth team title of the spring, as Wilber-Clatonia narrowly defeated the Irish, 119.5 to 119, last Tuesday at the Lewiston Invitational in Pawnee City.

The Irish and Wolverines each finished with six event winners, but the difference came in the number of individual medalists – W-C finished with 22 top-6 finishes, while FCSH had 19.

Irish junior Austin Malone earned a pair of first-place finishes in the long jump and triple jump with leapsof 19 feet, 8 1/2 inches and 42 feet, 3 3/4 inches, respectively. Malone was also part of the first-place finishing 400-meter and 1600-meter relay teams. The 400-meter team of Malone, senior Chaz Dunn, junior Sawyer Kean and senior Yianni Haralabidis finished with a time of 44.7 seconds and were more than a second better than runnerup Wilber-Clatonia. The 1600-meter
relay team of Dunn, Kean, Malone and sophomore Henry Arnold earned gold with a time of 3:37.6.

Haralabidis finished first in the 100-meter dash (11.6 seconds) and runner-up in the 200 (23.3) and senior Sean Strasheim claimed gold in the pole vault with a height of 13-feet. Other individual finishes for FCSH: Kean was third in the 100 (11.8), fourth in the long jump (18-11 1/2); Arnold was second in the 400 (52.6), third in the 200 (23.6) and fourth in the triple jump (40-01); Dunn took second in the 800 (2:06.7); freshman Emerson Keithly finished third in the 3200 meters (11:51.1); senior Colin Niemeyer was sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (17.8); senior Jarod Fiegener finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the shot put (43-09 1/2) and discus (125-02).

Wilber-Clatonia claimed the girls’ team title with a team score of 141 1/3 points, which was 50 points better than second-place Sterling (91). Freeman (83), Lourdes Central Catholic (53) and FC Sacred Heart (44 1/3) rounded out the top five.

Maggie Goltz earned the lone first-place finish for the Lady Irish, as the sophomore jumped 33 feet, 9 inches and claimed gold in the triple jump. Junior Elizabeth Magdanz finished second in the pole vault behind HTRS’ Bailey Kuhlmann, as Kuhlmann cleared 7 feet 6 inches and Magdanz topped out at 7-feet.

FCSH freshman Jade Hill was third in both the triple jump (33 feet, 1/2 inch) and 800-meter run (2:37.7) and tied for fourth in the pole vault (6 feet). Hill, senior Kathryn Bieker, freshman Haylee Heits and Elizabeth Magdanz combined to finish fifth in the 1600-meter relay with a time of 4:49.1.

Also placing for the Lady Irish were freshman Libby Dunn (4th, 1600, 6:22.4), senior Rachel Parrish (5th, 100-meter hurdles, 18.2) and Heits (4th, discus, 99-09).

Sacred Heart hosted the Irish Invitational today in Syracuse and next Tuesday travel to the Pawnee City Invitational.
