Iva B. Smith Leafty

 

 

 

Iva Beulah Smith Leafty, 90, of Reserve, KS, passed away Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, at the home of her daughter, where she lived the past six years.

She was born Aug. 3, 1923, at Humboldt, the daughter of David and Aldine Elizabeth Peck Smith and grew up in the Salem area.

She married James W. Leafty on Aug. 3, 1941. Iva was a homemaker and the mother of 17 children. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Hiawatha and served two missions: one in Rapid City, SD, and a Temple Mission in Dallas, TX, with her husband, James.

Survivors include seven sons, Ronald, Virgil, Larry and David Leafty, Lincoln, James R. Leafty, West Jordan, UT, and Eldon and Gary Leafty, Reno, NV, seven daughters, Rebecca Reeves, West Jordan, Arlene Leafty, Nebraska, Leona Leafty, Washougal, WA, Coleen and Carol Leafty, Indiana, Renae Meints, Reserve, and Linda Sailors, Morrill, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Also surviving are a sister, Lois Bauer, Olathe, KS, and a brother, Jess Smith, New Hampshire.

Iva was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons, Isaac and George, a daughter, Candy “Myrtle” Carter, four sisters, Virginia, Irene, Myrtle and Edith, and three brothers, Edward, Donald and Richard Smith.

Services were planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Hiawatha, with President Larson presiding.  Interment was to follow at the Hiawatha Cemetery.

The family was to meet with friends one hour prior to the services at the church.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Iva Leafty Memorial Fund in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha.
