Dorothy E. Vollmer, 86, of Falls City, NE, passed away January 7, 2022 at Falls City. She was born April 4, 1935 in rural Salem to Charles F. Werner and Elizabeth (Wilhelm) Werner. She was the fourth of five children.
She attended District 79 grade school, which was a quarter mile from her home. She graduated from Verdon High School with the class of 1953.
She and Harold E. Vollmer were married on Easter Sunday, April 10, 1955 at St Mark’s Lutheran Church, rural Verdon, he passed away February 19, 2017. They made their home on a farm in rural Verdon. Moving to the current residence in Falls City in 1995. They are the parents of three daughters, Leann, Barbara, and Lynett. Dorothy helped on the farm feeding cows and pigs, walking the soybeans fields, keeping books for the farming operation and running errands. She also raised laying hens delivering eggs to restaurants, grocery stores and many private homes in Falls City.
Dorothy worked off the farm for a few years for her brother-in-law at Pickard’s Market in Falls City.
Dorothy is a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church rural Falls City. She was an active member of the Altar Society and Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, serving in various offices. Dorothy was a prior member of the church choir and for many years coordinated Wednesday evening meals for youth attending Wednesday night classes.
Dorothy was an active member of the Fairview Club of Verdon joining the club in 1954. She and Harold enjoyed playing Pinochle belonging to two different card clubs and playing monthly at church.
Dorothy enjoyed gardening and always had a large garden while on the farm. After moving to town, she raised many indoor houseplants and flowerbeds.
With the help of her husband, Harold, she prepared material for the church sewing group to make many hundreds of quilts for the Orphan Grain Train. Dorothy was very kind and generous, always ready to help where she could.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Leann Nelson and husband, James, Aurora NE and Barbara Shurtleff, Falls City, son-in-law, Timothy Wood and wife Stephanie, Livermore, CO, grandchildren, Anthony Shafer and Rachel, Shubert, Dylan Wood, Hastings, Rebecca Dial and husband Austin, Lexington SC, Derek Shurtleff, Falls City and Bradyn Wood, Hays KS. Great-granddaughter, Lily Sailors, Shubert and great-grandson, Carson Dial, Lexington SC. Sister, Anita Pickard, sisters-in-law, Norma Werner, Dorothy Nolte, and Caroline Werner. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harold, daughter, Lynett Wood, son-in-law, Kenneth Shurtleff; brothers, Charles, Robert, and Edwin Werner, brothers-in-law, Richard “Dick” Pickard, Harvey Vollmer, Gerald Nolte, sisters-in-law, Colleen Werner and Donna Vollmer, nephews, David Werner, Richard Werner, and Timothy Pickard.
Her funeral will be held on Friday, January 14, 2022 at 10:30 AM at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6 miles north, with Reverend Daniel Gifford officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery.
