The Falls City High Tiger football team celebrated Homecoming 2014 in fine fashion, as senior Brenden Heckenlively had a hand in four consecutive first half touchdown plays, the JV offense put points on the board before halftime, and the Tigers handled Douglas County West 60-12 to improve to 3-1 on the season.
FC scored five times in the opening period and punctuated each short, sweet drive with a successful two-point conversion attempt, giving themselves a tremendous 40-0 lead after just 12 minutes of play. Of the five productive TD drives in the quarter, the very first one, which spanned 39 yards in three plays and used 1:18 of game clock, was the most time-consuming of all.

Senior Jack Hartman (4 carries, 41 yards, TD; 4-of-5 throwing, 123 yards, TD) scored from the 20 on a quarterback draw to put FC on the board fewer than 80 seconds into the game. Hartman added the PAT run and the handwriting was certainly already on the wall. A minute later, Hartman found senior Zach Jordening for a 35-yard TD pass (Weston Witt ran in the PAT), which set up four consecutive touchdowns by Heckenlively: nine-yard run (PAT pass from Hartman to Jordening), 53-yard pass to senior Jordy Stoller (Stoller PAT run) and three-yard run (Stoller PAT run), all coming before the first quarter was up, and a 28-yard scoring run (Bradly Rose PAT run) midway through the second period.
A 29-yard Rose touchdown run, with just seconds remaining in the half, made it 54-0 FC before the king was even crowned. Rose added a 57-yard TD late in the third period and finished with a game-high 102 yards rushing on just four attempts.
Defensively, Hartman recorded a 12-yard sack, Justin Ernst had a pair of tackles behind the line of scrimmage, and both Hartman and Derek McCann recovered fumbles for FC.
The Tigers travel to Auburn Friday to face the 1-3 Bulldogs, which lost a 20-13 heartbreaker at still-unbeaten Raymond Central last week. Auburn’s lone victory was a 28-20 Week 3 home win over Fairbury.
No win should come as easily as last week’s FC victory over DCC, but this same Falcons team beat Conestoga 27-22 on Sept. 5, and FC hosts Conestoga the final week of the regular season. To be blunt, FC has had three “easy” wins thus far and another four are on the menu: Friday, Oct. 3 at 0-4 Louisville, Oct. 10 back home vs. Johnson CC and then that aforementioned date with the mighty Cougars of Conestoga.
Yes, one Friday was left out – that would be Oct. 17 at Syracuse, for a district championship and state playoff berth. The 2-2 Rockets opened the year with losses to Bishop Neumann (30-29) and Ashland (28-13). The last two weeks, they’ve won handily: 45-0 over Lincoln Lutheran and 45-9 at Wahoo. Like Falls City, there remains for Syracuse one more scary Friday this fall. And it ain’t Halloween.
