The Tiger boys capitalized on a big second quarter Friday night in their season opener at Syracuse and held off the Rockets, 49-38.
Falls City, who was recognized last week as a contender in the Lincoln Journal Star’s preseason rankings, scored 20 points in the second period to open up a 31-20 halftime lead and Syracuse wasn’t able to take advantage of a six-point FC third quarter.
Neither team shot the ball and the two were nearly identical from the field. FC finished 15-of-41 from the floor and 1-for-13 from the three-point line, while Syracuse converted 14-of-41 field goal attempts, but knocked down 5-of-20 threes to keep it respectable.
The difference in the game came at the free-throw line, where the Tigers were 18-of-21 compared to just 5-for-7 from the Rockets. FC was 10-for-10 from the stripe in the second quarter, then 6-for-7 – all coming from junior Jordy Stoller – in the fourth quarter.
Senior Mitchell Harling led a trio of Tigers in double figures with 14 points, while Stoller and fellow junior Jack Hartman each added 13. Harling added six assists to go along with his 14 points and Hartman pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
The Rockets were led by Aaron Halvorsen’s 11 points.
FC (1-0) travels to Hiawatha, KS tonight then hosts rival Auburn Friday.

FC Head Coach Max Milam said his team hung right with the Lady Rockets for three quarters, but some miscues late in the game did them in.
“We played well for three quarters and then had five very poor offensive sets to start the fourth,” Milam said. “To many mental mistakes versus a good team like Syracuse.”
