Humboldt-TR-S’ Lady Titans were defeated in four sets Monday night at Auburn in the first round of the Class C2-1 sub-district by ninth-ranked Palmyra, officially ending their season with a 14-15 record.
HTRS won the first set, 25-23, but Palmyra rallied to capture the final three sets, 25-18, 25-21, 25-14.
Palmyra (22-5) will face second-ranked Freeman (25-4) Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the sub-district final. Freeman defeated Wymore Southern, 25-18, 25-15, 25-19 in the first round.
HTRS senior Courtney Allen served 11 points with two aces and recorded 14 digs, five kills and one ace block, while junior Ashton Nanninga contributed five service points with one ace, 11 kills and six ace blocks. Senior Kasey Kappel passed for 23 assists to go along with her 10 digs.
Along with Allen and Kappel, seniors Mollee Sharpe and Carmen Alexander played their final matches for HTRS.
HTRS went 1-2 at last week’s Pioneer Conference tournament, defeating Southern, 25-20, 21-25, 25-19, last Monday in the opening round.
Sharpe and Nanninga led HTRS at the net with 10 kills each. Nanninga added 10 team-high points serving and two ace blocks. Defensively, Alexander recorded 23 digs, while Allen and junior Claire Svoboda picked up 18 and 16 digs, respectively.
HTRS had a quick turnaround match with fourth-ranked and top-seeded Sterling, following their win over Southern. The Jets proved to be to strong and handed HTRS a two-set loss, 25-21, 25-21.
Svoboda served eight point and Nanninga put away seven kills and three ace blocks.
In the consolation match Tuesday night, Diller-Odell defeated HTRS in a hard-fought, five-set match, 26-24, 24-26, 25-17, 23-25, 15-11.
Kappel finished with team-highs in assists, 35, and digs, 24, while Nanninga led the HTRS attack with 14 kills and three ace blocks. Svoboda had a big night serving with 17 points and five aces.
