Falls City BOE seeks applicants to fill vacancy

The Falls City Public School Board of Education is currently taking applications from District 56 patrons interested in filling the vacancy on the board created with the death of 25-year member Kathy Bartek.

The application deadline is 6 p.m. Monday, July 22. The Board will discuss the vacancy and candidates at a special meeting scheduled to start at 7.             

The school board term will expire in January 2017. The person appointed will serve until January 2015, and will have to run for a two-year term in the 2014 general election.

Mrs. Bartek died June 23 at the age of 55 after a 15-month battle with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. She was elected to the board in 1988 and was serving her seventh term. She was the President of the Nebraska Association of School Boards. In her 25 years on the school board she only missed three meetings.She earned the Nebraska Rural Community Schools Association ‘School Board Member of the Year’ Award in 2013 and in 2012 she received the Ann Mactier Leadership Award, and also the Robert J. Chab ‘Community Service Award.’
