MARVIN SCHEITEL (1929-2015)


Former local businessman and active philanthropist Marvin Scheitel, 85, founder, owner and operator of Scheitel Feed & Seed in Falls City, passed away Saturday morning, March 14, 2015 at Falls City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He battled kidney disease for the past 11 years, moving into the nursing home in 2012.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at Zion United Church of Christ, northeast of Falls City, with Pastor Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery, with military graveside honors by the Falls City Ceremonial Honor Guard.The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home, Falls City.

Marvin purchased half interest in Ebel Seed Co. in 1965 and acquired the entire business on Nov. 1, 1972, formally changing the name to Scheitel Feed & Seed. His son, Kevin, joined the operation after his high school graduation in 1979 and took over day-to-day operations in 1985.

He was also an active and popular member of the community. Marvin was a founding member of Falls City Recreation and a Past Exalted Ruler of Falls City Elks Lodge #963. Actually, it was 50 years ago this week he became Exalted Ruler at the Elks. He served one term as President of the FC Country Club Board of Directors and also served on the City of Falls City Utility and Community Hospital Boards. Marvin was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ and VFW Post 1765, and was an avid Falls City High School Tiger Booster.

He was born April 27, 1929 east of Falls City to the late Elmer and Emelia (Zimmerman) Scheitel. He was raised at Falls City and graduated from FC High School, where he played football and basketball, in 1946. Following graduation, Marvin farmed with his father until being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951. Upon his honorable discharge in 1953, he returned to Falls City and continued to farm. On Dec. 12, 1954 he married Patricia Richmond at Zion United Church of Christ and the couple established their home east of Falls City, where they raised their son and also a daughter, Kari. Mr. and Mrs. Scheitel later moved into a house in town and, upon his semi-retirement from the family business, Marvin and Pat spent the winter months in Arizona with several other Falls City couples. 

Marvin is survived by his wife, Patricia Scheitel, of FC; son, Kevin (Gina) Scheitel, of FC; daughter, Kari (Larry) Shubert, of FC; sister, Lucille (Kenneth) Yoesel, of Sabetha, KS; grandchildren, Trent Scheitel, of Omaha, Brooke Scheitel, of Lincoln, Taylor Shubert (and her fiancé Jeremy Kearney), of Falls City, and Rachel Shubert, of Lincoln; and one great-granddaughter, Aven Kearney.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Wilbur; and a sister, Evelyn Gatz.
