The 2014-15 Falls City High School wrestling season ended a week premature, as the Tigers last Saturday at the Class B-2 District Meet in Nebraska City failed to send anybody, even senior heavyweight Jeremy Zimmerman, to this weekend’s state meet in Omaha.

Zimmerman, a fifth-place state medalist as a junior, was right on track after a pair of pins sent him to a semifinal showdown with Waverly’s Justin Hennessy. That Zimmerman lost to the 33-4 Hennessy (he was pinned in 2:46) wasn’t an upset, but that was coming. In the final seconds of the “heartbreak round,” aka the consolation semifinals, Zimmerman surrendered an escape and takedown in the final seconds of a 3-0 loss to Plattsmouth’s Jason Nanke. Astoundingly, Zimmerman’s season – and high school wrestling career – was over.

It wasn’t supposed to be over this soon. Coming off a 41-11 junior season that ended on the podium at Omaha’s Centurylink Center, it was almost a given that Zimmerman would return to state this winter. And that thinking didn’t change over the course of the regular season, as he posted a sterling 34-5 record.

It improved to 35-5 with a 48-second pin over Ethan Warren of Platteview Friday; then to 36-5 with a 3:24 pin over Alex DeGarmo of Ashland-Greenwood in the semifinals.

Goes to show you upsets do happen and it’s the reason they make them wrestle.

The 2015 State Wrestling Meet in Omaha will go on without any Falls City Orange & Black. Sophomore Parker Thompson (120, 7-16), senior Justin Ernst (145, 10-12), junior Blake Black (160, 6-11), sophomore Carter Hunzeker (170, 7-14) and sophomore Isaac Hogue (220, 10-9) all competed for FC at districts, but they were each held winless in two matches apiece.

Like Zimmerman and FC, Humboldt-TR/Pawnee City and wrestlers Ben Railsback (40-8) and Jesse Hickey (32-12) were also shutout of the state meet.
