Jere J. Herold

 Jere J. Herold, 68, of Sabetha, KS, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014.  He was born in Falls City on Jan. 31, 1946, to John and Edna (Gerweck) Herold.

Jere graduated from Morrill High School in 1964 and attended Kansas State University. He joined the Sabetha unit of the Kansas National Guard in 1966 and was called to Army active duty in 1968. He reached the rank of Staff Sergeant while earning multiple commendations and served until February 1972.

Jere was a long-time Sabetha resident and had previously served as an EMT, volunteer firefighter and with the auxiliary police.  He was also a long-time employee of Wenger Manufacturing and a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his stepmother, Helen Hoemann, Hiawatha, four sisters, Marcia Salyer, Wellsville, KS, Doris Marteny, Hiawatha, Mary Herbster, Morrill, and Linda Berkley, Morrill, six children, Laura Hanna, Vassar, KS, Shawn Herold, Martinsburg, WV, Tara Hartter, Sabetha, Andrea Otto, Fenton, MO, Amanda Stahlschmidt, St. Peters, MO, and Adam Herold, St. Charles, MO, and 14 grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his father and mother, stepfather, Ernie Hoemann, wife, Mary (Herrmann) Herold, and a sister, Judy Bestwick.

A graveside service was held Friday, April 4, at the Sabetha Cemetery. Visitation was at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha.  Military honors were conducted at the cemetery by VFW Post #7285, Sabetha.
