Irish boys come from behind to beat North Andrew

Sacred Heart trailed for three quarters last Tuesday against a salty 16-4 North Andrew (MO) team, but rallied in the final eight minutes and turned a two-point deficit into a 55-47 victory.

FCSH junior Austin Malone scored his team’s first four points of the fourth quarter to start the comeback. The Irish held on by knocking down 8-of-11 free-throw attempts down the stretch and finished the game 16 of 19 from the stripe.

Senior Matt Goltz finished a perfect 8-for-8 from the line and led FCSH with 16 points. Senior Chaz Dunn scored 13, while Malone finished with 12.

Friday the No. 1 Irish improved to 21-2 as they put on a clinic in a 74-37 victory over Palmyra.

FCSH drained eight three’s and finished 29 for 54 from the floor.

Dunn, senior Colin Niemeyer and junior Logan Scheitel each hit multiple three’s and finished with 15, 11 and 13 points, respectively. Senior Jarod Fiegener scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds for the second-straight game.

Malone scored nine, swiped four steals and dished out three assists, while Dunn recorded six assists and turned it over just once.

Dunn’s 15 points Friday brought him to exactly 300 for the season and he leads the Irish with 110 assists, 47 steals and 39 three-pointers. Goltz is 27 points shy of 300 and is the team leader with 186 rebounds, 45 blocked shots and is connecting at a 63-percent rate from the floor (97-154 FGM/A). Niemeyer and Malone should give this year’s team four 200-point scorers, as the two have 186 and 181 points, respectively.

Saturday FCSH travels to Nebraska City for a rematch with Pioneer Conference championship game foe, Lourdes Central Catholic, who were ranked seventh in D1 last week, but  fell to 16-6 after a three-point home loss in overtime against C2 No.  4 Fremont Bergan.

FCSH defeated Lourdes, 50-45, Feb. 8 to win the conference tournament.
