Michael D. Bennett

God’s gift to many people, Michael David Bennett was born on May 27, 1984, to Rita and Steven Bennett, and joined the choirs in Heaven on July 31, 2013. The beginning of Michael’s life was a precarious one, but his determination and success at overcoming the obstacles of physical disability let us know very quickly that his life was meant to be a lesson to all of us…and for 29 years, Michael impacted so very many lives in so many positive ways.

We have heavy hearts that a fast-developing illness took him from us too soon — but we know he was enthusiastically welcomed with great fanfare to a place in paradise. He was a young man of very strong faith who did not hesitate to share it through his many talents.

Michael was a talented musician, especially at the piano where he would lose himself in coming up with amazingly beautiful, original compositions. He was so proud to share his love of music every chance he got — whether at his piano at home or at churches, a school talent shows, or at nursing homes.

In truth, Michael shared so many varied talents and abilities that we can’t name them all, but those who were privileged enough to get to know Michael will certainly agree. He enjoyed amazing professional success as a news and sports producer at KOLN-KGIN TV (10/11) in Lincoln, where he quickly endeared himself to his treasured coworkers. 10/11 became an important part of Michael’s family.  He also was proud of the years he spent as part of the staff of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and his participation in their music programs.

Michael was a member of First Plymouth Congregational Church in recent months, where he was welcomed as a member of the choir, and where he found many ways to continue to share his musical gift. Just like everywhere that Michael found himself, his charisma and charms and talents made him a quickly beloved man at First Plymouth.

Michael is survived by his parents, Rita and Steven Bennett, his sister, Kathryn (Katie) Marie Bennett, his grandmother, Wauneta Bennett, grandparents, Bill and Hilma Bidler, aunt and uncle, Marilyn and Duane Sorenson, aunt and uncle, Norm and Theresa Bennett of Arizona, aunt and uncle Judy and LeRoy Murphy of Falls City, aunt, Darlene Mertens, and close cousins, Russell (and Shannon) Bennett of Omaha and Jenna and Jessica Sorenson of Lincoln.

A celebration of Michael’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at First Plymouth Congregational Church, 2000 “D” St., in Lincoln, with a luncheon to follow. Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home, 4040 “A” St., Lincoln 68510. The family will be present to greet friends from 7-9 p.m.

Memorials to carry on Michael’s legacy of love and passion for Husker football should be directed to the Team Jack Foundation. Online condolences may be left at www.bmlfh.com
