Blue Storm Juniors now 6-2 away from SNC Field

A tough stretch of four games in five days concluded Saturday night for the Blue Storm Juniors, who fell on the road to Doniphan County, KS, 8-7, in the championship game of the Doniphan Tournament.

It was just the second road loss of the season though for the Juniors, who boast a 6-2 record away from their new ballpark.

The Juniors finished the week 2-2 with a win Friday in Wathena, KS over Atchison (10-0)  and last Wednesday at Plattsmouth (8-7).

Last Tuesday, FC fell to visiting Teckmeyer Financial, 11-3, which also ended their six-game winning streak.

Currently 10-6 overall, FC’s win over Plattsmouth brought  their record in the Southeast Nebraska Baseball Conference to 2-4, slotting them third in their division and seventh overall heading into next week’s conference tournament. The most likely scenario has the Juniors playing Auburn (7-6, 3-3) in Auburn next Tuesday night.

Next up for FC is a visit from Hiawatha, KS tonight at SNC Field. The Blue Storm head to Beatrice tomorrow. Both Juniors games this week are scheduled for 6 p.m.

Saturday night FC trailed Doniphan Co. 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth, but responded with five runs on five hits to take the lead 7-6. Then the improbable happened, as DC was down to their last out in the seventh and final inning before they rallied.

DC’s Chris Winkle tripled to right to start the rally, then back-to-back walks by FC reliever Tyler DiGiacomo loaded the bases. Wil Smith shot a groundball to second base that got by FC’s Bailey Witt and scored the game’s deciding runs.

DC’s Cooper Leach put FC away with a quick 1-2-3 seventh.

FC’s big fifth inning started with Trenton Pentecost’s single, a walk by Bailey Witt and a single by Koner Hogue to load the bases. Weston Witt doubled to right and drove in Pentecost and Witt, then Austin Malone’s single plated Hogue, but Weston was thrown out at home for the first out of the inning.

Malone advanced to third on a DiGiacomo single, then scored on a balk by Leach to tie the game at 6-6. Two batters later, Zach Jordening’s infield single scored DiGiacomo and gave FC their first lead of the game.

Jordening and Malone each finished 2-3 at the plate and combined for three RBIs, while Weston Witt drove in three. Malone and Bailey Witt each scored twice.

FC’s six-run sixth inning led to an eventual 10-run-rule victory over Atchison Friday night in the first round of the Doniphan Co. Tourney.

Logan Scheitel went the distance for FC and earned his team-high fifth victory of the season. Scheitel recorded seven strikeouts and allowed just two hits in the shutout.

Weston Witt and Bailey Witt each drove in a pair of runs, while Dalton Witt, Colton Reiss, Sawyer Kean and Scheitel all recorded one RBI. Kean joined Weston with two hits.

The winning run was scored by Bailey Witt, who  reached on a fielder’s choice and then stole second to get into scoring position.

FC extended their early lead to 7-0 with three runs in the fourth, but Plattsmouth answered right back with five in the fifth and two more in the sixth to tie it up.

Tyler DiGiacomo started the game for FC and through four innings allowed only three singles and  only five baserunners.

Austin Malone, Koner Hogue and Logan Scheitel each recorded two hits, while Hogue added a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Bailey Witt scored twice to lead FC.
