Margaret Sue Steffen

Sue Steffen, 91, of rural Humboldt, passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2017, at her home in rural Humboldt. Margaret Sue Steffen was born on April 20, 1926 to Halley and Hazel Fishwood in Dawson.

After graduation from the University of Nebraska in 1948, she taught Home Economics in Albion, NE, for two years. Sue married her college sweetheart, Richard Steffen, on June 23rd, 1950.

They farmed at Diller, NE, for seven years before moving to Humboldt in 1957. Richard and Sue raised four children, established their family farm, and cared for their church, community, and each other deeply. Sue was a faithful and active member of the United Methodist Church, playing piano and organ for over 50 years.

She served on the Board of Education of Humboldt Public Schools and was a 50-year member of PEO. Sue was a tireless and devoted wife, mother, and friend.

Sue is survived by her four children: Joe (Jan) Steffen, Mary Gotlieb, Sarah Pineda, and Ben (Paula Sue) Steffen; six grandchildren: Katie Jo and Samuel Steffen, Naomi (Eric) Rios, Hannah Gotlieb, Michelle and Patrick Pineda; and great-grandson: Logan Rios.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Richard, and a brother Homer (Ruth) Fishwood. Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 29, 2017, at the Starr Cemetery east of Humboldt, Nebraska with Pastors Dorothy Smith and Jaclyn Hoy officiating.

A register book will be available to sign from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2017, at The Wherry Mortuary in Humboldt. A luncheon and time of fellowship will be held immediately following the committal service at the United Methodist Church in Humboldt. Memorial contributions may be given to the family’s choice.
