HAROLD VOLLMER

Harold Vollmer, 84, of Falls City, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017, four days before his 85th birthday. He was born on Feb. 23, 1932 on a farm in rural Falls City to Herbert A. and Hilda L. Eickhoff Vollmer. He was the oldest of four children.  
    Harold attended both the Christ Lutheran and St. Paul’s Lutheran Elementary Schools. He graduated from Falls City High School in 1951.
    Harold and Dorothy Werner were married on Easter Sunday, April 10, 1955 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, rural Verdon. They made their home on a farm in rural Verdon, moving to their current residence in Falls City in 1995. They are the parents of three daughters, Leann, Barbara and Lynett.
    Harold worked on the family farm alongside his father and brother, Harvey.  In 1964, they incorporated the farming operation, becoming Cedar Farms Inc. Harold retired from the farm in 1995.
    He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Falls City.  He was on the Verdon Coop Board, serving a chairperson. After retirement, Harold became “domesticated,” baking bread, washing dishes, cleaning house and other chores.  He and Dorothy would gather black walnuts, which Harold would shell and sell to happy customers.
    Harold and Dorothy enjoyed playing Pinochle, belonging to two different card clubs and playing cards at church.  
    In November, the women’s sewing group at St. Paul’s awarded Harold the “best quilt block cutter” for all his work in cutting the quilt blocks that were made into hundreds of quilts for the Orphan Grain Train and Lutheran World Relief.
    Left to cherish his memory are his wife; daughters, Leann (James)Nelson, of Aurora, Barbara (Kenneth) Shurtleff, of Falls City; son-in-law, Timothy Wood, of North Platte; grandchildren, Anthony (Rachel) Shafer, of Shubert, Dylan Wood, of North Platte, Rebecca Shafer, of Alamogordo, NM, Derek Shurtleff, of Milford, and Bradyn Wood, of Hays, KS; great granddaughter, Lily Sailors, of Falls City; brother, Harvey (Donna) Vollmer; sister, Dorothy (Gerald) Nolte; sisters in law, Anita Pickard, Norma Werner and Caroline Werner; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
    Harold was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Lynett Wood in 2011; and brother, Edward Vollmer, in 1952.
    His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, 2017 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, six miles north of Falls City, with Rev. Daniel Gifford officiating. Interment will be in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home, Falls City. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials be made to Family Choice for later designation.
