KERMIT L. SHAWL

Kermit Lyle Shawl, 73, passed away Sept. 2, 20l4. He was born Oct. 30, l940, the eldest son of Clifford and Eloise (Chaney) Shawl, in Fremont, Ohio.            
    When he was ll years old the family moved from Bergoon, Ohio, to Southern California. His first job was a long paper route before school and then he worked for the “Little Rascals” nanny helping raise rabbits for market. When he was in Junior High, the family moved to Henderson, NV.
    Mr. Shawl’s religious background was Baptist and also at Four Mile Church, south of Humboldt. He attended Basic High School where he received the first honor awarded for auto mechanics.  He worked on cars for family and friends, including keeping both city taxicabs running.  
    Kermit worked for Kerr McGee for 10 years before switching to electrician: welder apprentice in the IBEW 357 union in Las Vegas, NV. He worked his way up to general superintendent for Acme, Desert Construction and Stetson Electric. He retired in 1988 to be a  farmer/rancher near Caliente, NV. He went back to help out with a freeway job in Las Vegas in 1990 which resulted in 10 more years of running many crews on multiple jobs. He was the first person to synchronize the traffic lights in the Las Vegas valley.
    He was well liked and respected in his job, having engineers and inspectors saying “If it Kermit Shawl’s job it is going to be right.”
    He retired and bought a farm south of Humboldt in 2001 where he liked to work in his shop doing welding and tinkering with things he bought at numerous auctions that he and his dog Tippy went to.
    He loved his family and liked many family get-togethers and holidays. He loved to tease everyone, having nicknames for many.
    He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Jo Shawl, of Humboldt; son, Troy (Kathy), of Murdock, KS; daughters, Judy (Tom) Davis of Ft. Scott, KS, and Tracy Isaacc, also of Ft. Scott; stepsons, Jeff (Vashela), Falls City, and Rob Martineau, of Humboldt; stepdaughter, Lynette Murray, of Henderson, NV; brothers, Steve (Tori) Shawl, of Portland, OR, and Jeff (Doris) Shawl, of Henderson, NV; sister, Constance (Ted) Deacon, of Maopa, NV; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
    A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014 at the Four Mile Church, south of Humboldt. His ashes will be interred at the Wildrose Cemetery, south of Dawson, at a later date.
