Falls City runs over Fairbury

Falls City High racked up the rushing yards once again as they built a 35-0 halftime lead Friday night on the road before eventually beating Fairbury 49-7.    

The Tigers, who improved to 4-2 on the year, rushed 50 times for 486 yards and held Fairbury (1-5) to 31 attempts for 107 yards. Through six games the Tigers are averaging 340 yards per game on the ground.

FC’s only pass came on their first offensive play from scrimmage and fell incomplete, leading to a three-and-out and their only punt of the game. FC held the Jeffs to a punt on the next possession, then scored on their next five possessions.

Jordy Stoller scored the game’s first touchdown and the first of his three rushing touchdowns in the game on a 52-yard TD run with 3:36 left in the first quarter. The junior running back’s second score, a 17-yard run, put FC ahead 16-0 at the end of the first quarter. Stoller added his third score of the game in the second quarter and finished the night with six carries for 138 yards.

FC also got second quarter rushing touchdowns from junior Brenden Heckenlively and senior Mitchell Harling, who scored on eight and 32 yards runs, respectively.

In the second half, with the clock running continuous because of the 35-0 lead, FC’s Jack Hartman and Cody Schawang tacked on the Tiger’s final two touchdowns. Hartman scored on a 20-yard TD run with 7:59 left in the third and Schawang found the end zone on a one-yard plunge with just over four minutes left in the ball game.

FC senior Tyler DiGiacomo finished with seven carries for 87 yards, Harling rushed five times for 66 yards and Hartman carried six times for 59 yards.

For the second week in a row, FC senior Derek McCann led the Tiger defense, finishing with a team-high eight tackles, four of which were solo stops. Senior Reese Hogue had six stops, one-and-a-half sacks and two tackles for loss. Hogue, Harling, Stoller and junior Brody Weinmann all finished with three solo tackles.

The Tigers host 2-4 Auburn this Friday night for Homecoming.
