Beatrice captures title of FC High Invitational

 

 

 

Class B Beatrice flexed their muscles Saturday to win three-straight matches and claim the championship trophy of the Falls City Invitational. Beatrice defeated Fairbury 25-14 and 25-15, then held off Class C-2 contender Palmyra, 25-20, 18-25 and 26-24 to set up a final with Class D-2 No. 4 Sterling, who they defeated in straight sets, 25-22 and 25-13.

The Lady Tigers dropped their first two matches, but rallied to defeat Tri-County to salvage seventh place. FC dropped the first game to T-C, 21-25, but won the next two, 25-19 and 25-14. In their first two matches of the day, FC lost to Palmyra 25-17 and 25-7, then fell to Fairbury, 25-21 and 25-21.

FC, now 6-17 on the season, was led by senior Madison Olberding, who recorded 50 digs and 13 kills in the three games Saturday. Junior Baylee Vrtiska passed for 32 assists in the three games, while also combining for 37 digs.

Junior Chelsea Campbell had a big match serving against T-C, recording 15 points and four aces on 18-of-18 serves. Freshman Alyssa Frederick was 12-for-12 on her serves with eight points and also put away four kills and recorded 20 digs against T-C. FC was led at the net by junior Jerrica Beckner (5 kills) and sophomore Libby Bauman (9 solo blocks).

FC hosts St. Joe Lafayette (MO) tonight, with the junior varsity scheduled to begin at 5, followed by the varsity match. The Lady Tigers final home matches are Thursday during the triangular with Auburn and Marysville, KS. Playing her final home game is FC’s lone senior, Madison Olberding. Thursday’s matches begin at 5 p.m.
