Ruth A. Wolfe

 

 

 

Ruth Anne (Kelly) Wolfe, 88, of Falls City, formerly of Atchison, KS, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at the Falls City Healthcare Community in Falls City.

She was born on Nov. 7, 1924, in Effingham, KS, the daughter of Matt and Lucy (Sullivan) Kelly. She attended grade school in Effingham and graduated from high school from St. Theresa’s Academy in Kansas City. She began working for the Atchison Daily Globe and married insurance agent Don Wolfe at the Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago on Nov. 24, 1949. Mr. Wolfe preceded her in death on May 28, 1998.

After her children started school, she worked as a legal assistant for Wagoner and Foley Law Firm in Atchison. Early in the 1970’s, she became an administrative assistant for General Colin Powell at the United States Army Staff and Command College at Fort Leavenworth, KS. The highlight of her career was being sent to Germany to record minutes from the War Room meetings as the Gulf War was being planned. After retiring at the age of 70, she returned to college, taking math, religion and literature courses. In retirement she spent several mornings a week at the grade school helping students with their reading skills. She volunteered weekly at the Atchison Library and giving tours at the Amelia Earhart Museum.

She is survived by her two sons, David (Martha) Wolfe, Falls City, and Thomas Wolfe, Leavenworth, KS; daughter, Jane (Bob) Hagan, Wichita, KS; a son-in-law, Wes Blair, Atchison; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Her parents, husband, Don, her daughter, Julie Blair, and her brother, Eugene Kelly, preceded Mrs. Wolfe in death.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Sacred Heart Church, with Fr. Gabriel Landis, OSB, as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens, Atchison. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until the time of services at Sacred Heart Church. The Becker Dyer Stanton Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Sacred Heart Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
