Lady Titans finish second in Mudecas “B”

One game down and one to go was where the Humboldt-TR-S volleyball team found themselves last Thursday night after they defeated Meridian 25-22 in the first set of the Mudecas Tournament “B” division championship in Beatrice. Unfortunately, it wasn’t in the cards for the Lady Titans, who dropped the final two sets to Meridian (18-25, 18-25) and finished as runners-up. It was HTRS’ best finish since 2009 when they defeated Falls City Sacred Heart in the first round en route to a fourth place finish.

HTRS senior Courtney Allen and junior Ashton Nanninga led the charge at the net against Meridian with nine and eight kills, respectively. The duo also combined for four ace blocks, while sophomore Claire Svoboda added a pair of ace blocks and served 10 points. Senior Kasey Kappel served seven points and passed for 21 assists and fellow senior, Carmen Alexander, picked up a team-high 22 digs.

HTRS reached the title game by defeating Southern (25-17, 21-25, 25-22) and Lewiston (25-15, 25-13).

In the win over Souther Tuesday night, Allen and Nanninga put away 11 and 12 kills, respectively. Allen also recorded seven points and a team-high 24 digs. Alexander chipped in 23 digs, while sophomore Bailey Kuhlmann served a team-high 11 points.

Allen served a season-high six aces to lead the way in the opening round win over Lewiston.

The Meridian loss dropped the Lady Titans record to 6-3, but HTRS will have ample opportunity to build on their win total, as their next three matches will be played at home against sub-par opponents. HTRS hosts College View (0-5) tonight, Lewiston (1-10) Thursday night and Johnson County Central (2-6) next Tuesday. The Lady Titans defeated JCC in two sets at a home triangular back on Sept. 5.
