Larry Robert Hayes Sr., of Morrill, KS, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.
He was born Dec. 31, 1945, at Hiawatha, one of six children born to Robert and Lois Benson Hayes. Larry grew up at Hiawatha, where he attended schools. He enlisted in the 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery, Kansas Army National Guard of Hiawatha and served during the Vietnam War. He followed road construction with family for a few years prior to operating service stations in the area. For most of his life, Larry was a coast-to-coast over-the-road truck driver.
He married Betty Johansen on Aug. 22, 1964, at Hamlin. They made Morrill their home since 1983. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include his children, Larry Robert (Sandy) Hayes Jr., Scott City, KS, Kimberly Dawn (Bill) Atwood of Harveyville, KS, six grandsons, his siblings, Joyce Allen and Carol Brown, both of Hiawatha, Jeanine Fritz, Verdon, Janet Weber, Overland Park, KS, Don Hayes, Chandler, AZ, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Misty, who died July 21, 1966.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, Sept. 13, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. A nephew, Bryan Davidson, Wymore officiated. Interment followed at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. The family met friends Thursday evening.
