Alice Arlene (Thomas) Oberst

Alice Arlene (Thomas) Oberst, 82, of Sabetha, died Saturday, March 23, 2013 in Sabetha. She was born Oct. 2, 1930, to William Oscar Thomas and Ethel Viola McNary at Morrill, KS.

She grew up at Morrill, attended school there for 10 years and graduated from the Falls City High School in 1949. She married Robert Oberst Dec. 4, 1949. They lived northeast of Falls City, where they were engaged in farming until 1958 when they moved to Tucson, AZ.  They moved to Hamlin, KS, in 1965 and then to Morrill in 1967. After Robert’s passing, Alice moved to Sabetha.

Alice has been a member of the WMS of the Morrill Baptist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, Post #322 of Fairview, KS. She worked for Wilde Tool Co. in Hiawatha, Fashion Center in Sabetha, and the Richardson Stationary Co. of Falls City as a sales clerk until retiring in October 1992. Alice loved to read and during her retirement she volunteered at the Falls City and Sabetha libraries.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Edith Armstrong; and two brothers, Payton Thomas and Donald Lee Thomas.

She is survived by two sons, David Oberst (Cindy), of Lexington Park, MD, and Bill Oberst (Sue), of Salem; daughters, Dianna Kottich (Doug), of Falls City, and Linda Hill, of Morrill; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren;  brother, Fred Thomas, of York; brother-in-law, Kenneth Oberst, of Gladstone, MO; sisters-in-law, Juanita Hanika and Wilma Oberst, both of Falls City, Velma Koenig, of Texas, and Laverne Sherrill, of Verdon.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2013 at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Interment will be made in the Sabetha Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the

Mary Cotton Public Library in Sabetha, Falls City Library and Arts Center, or the Morrill Baptist Church, sent in care of the funeral home, 823 Virginia, Sabetha, KS 66534.
