Max William Shafer II, 84 of Shubert, NE, passed away July 31, 2021 at Lincoln, NE. He was born February 26, 1937 to Max and Rosa (Parchen) Shafer.
Max was born on the family farm 2 miles east of Shubert to Max William and Rosa (Parchen) Shafer on February 26, 1937. He was one of 5 children, Willis, Victor, Lois and Gordon. Max grew up on the farm helping with the farm work. He went to the one room school named Walnut Grove 1½ miles from the family farm. He attended Shubert High School where he enjoyed football and basketball.
Max met his future wife Joanne Vice while attending high school. Joanne’s family moved to Omaha for work so Max moved to Omaha and worked at Rosen Novak in the auto body division. The couple were married June 17, 1956.
Max’s dad passed away in 1957 so Max and Joanne moved back to the farm to help Rosa. After having their first child, daughter Treia VaNae, they found out she had a heart problem so they moved back to Omaha to seek medical treatment. Treia passed away in December of 1957.
Max and Joanne later moved back to the farm and had two children, Max William Shafer III and Penny Diane Shafer. They lived on the family farm until 1970 when they bought a farm one mile away. Max continued farming and worked for a security company eventually working security at Cooper Nuclear Station. Max retired from the nuclear plant and worked mowing 2 small cemeteries and working at Indian Cave State Park. They camp hosted at the park for many years. He continued these jobs up until the time of his death on July 31, 2021.
Max and Joanne loved to go camping, fishing and hunting and in later years enjoyed cooking together. Max was involved at the Shubert Christian Church for decades and enjoyed his time there.
Max is survived by his brother, Gordon, son Max III, daughter Penny and grandchildren Max William Shafer IV and Treia VaNae. Three step grandchildren, Jeff, Ben and Breanna Kosmicki and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Victor, brother Willis, sister Lois, wife Joanne and infant daughter Treia.
His funeral will be held Friday, August 6, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Shubert Christian Church. Interment will be in Prairie Union Cemetery.
Open visitation and viewing will begin Wednesday at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.
