The Falls City Green Team and Falls City Arboretum Board could not have asked for better weather when they hosted an Earth Day celebration on Apr. 22.
The event kicked off at noon with a “Fun Run” at Community Medical Center, and activities began at Stanton Lake and the Itha Krumme Arboretum shortly afterward. Activities included an ice cream social sponsored by Southeast Nebraska Communications, a self-defense demonstration by Clifford Lowe, a “recycled words” art project station hosted by Falls City Library and Arts Center, and several vendors with eco-friendly products such as beeswax-based soaps and raw honey.
There was also a live performance by Sum Guise with Jeff and Mary Barker, hosted by the Falls City Chamber of Commerce.
The City of Falls City also honored Don Baldwin, a longtime Falls City resident who is said to have facilitated the planting of over 200 trees throughout the city over the course of 45 years. Baldwin is a founding board member of the Itha Krumme Arboretum and has also been responsible for many of the trees surrounding Stanton Lake. A tree was planted in his honor near the Stanton Lake Cabin and he was presented a plaque that read, “Recognizing Donald Baldwin, public servant and community volunteer, in sincere appreciation for countless hours of service, help and contributions to the church, City Council, Tree Board, Arboretum Work Group and for being a steady and vital force to improve Falls City.”
People of all ages were in attendance for the event.
