Maggie Goltz breaks 20-year-old triple jump record

The FC Sacred Heart boys’ track team had to settle for runner-up in the team standings at Saturday’s Pioneer Conference Track Meet, having to compete without senior sprinter Sawyer Kean.

The previous Saturday, just days after running an 11-second 100-meter dash and tying a 17-year-old meet record at the Irish Invite at Syracuse, Kean at around the 75-meter mark was shifting into overdrive en route to another gold medal in the 100 meter finals at the MUDECAS Meet at Pawnee City when a hamstring injury made like a dark cloud on an otherwise brilliant sun-splashed day. Hamstrings don’t heal overnight; likewise, dark skies lingered into last weekend and remain in the immediate forecast.

The Nebraska Wesleyan football recruit, despite the injury, still captured the 100 that Saturday at Pawnee City (:11.7) — and both the 400- and 1600-meter relay teams, with Christian Harring and William Morehead, respectively, filling in nicely for Kean, still earned gold medals at Pioneer Conference Saturday in Auburn — but Kean’s absence was the difference between first and second at conference and his status for the May 13 Class D-1 District Meet in Auburn remains up in the air.

The Irish finished with 89 points at Auburn, four behind champion Sterling. Had Kean competed – and done so at 100 percent – it’s a safe bet the Irish would’ve scored 98 and Sterling, 89 (without him in the field, the Jets ran 3rd-4thand FCSH freshman Christian Harring placed sixth).

As mentioned, the relay teams still earned 10 points apiece, but their times were slightly slower without Kean in the lineup. Austin Malone, Henry Arnold, Keith Salimo and Harring ran the lap in :45.6 – easily out in front of runner-up Diller-Odell (:46.9) – after running :44.8 at the Irish Invite. Malone, Salimo, Morehead and Henry Arnold ran 3:40.6 to win the mile relay at the Pioneer. That’s eight seconds faster than second place Sterling, but also eight seconds slower than it had run with Kean hitting leadoff.

Malone and Henry Arnold each carried the proverbial baton for the Irish at the Pioneer, with Arnold winning the 200 (:23.3) and 400 (:54), and Malone the long jump (20-8.25) and triple jump (41-3.75). Both guys ran blistering :53.6 splits in that aforementioned 1600 relay.

Also winning for the Irish guys once again was sophomore Bryant Jorn in the shot put. His throw of 46-6 was a foot and a half further than runner-up.

For the Lady Irish, the story of the week was junior Maggie Goltz’ school record-setting triple jump of 35-3.75 April 25 at MUDECAS. The record was set 20 years ago by Celeste Nolte. Goltz “only” went 34-3.75 at the Pioneer meet, but it was still far enough for first, as teammate Jade Hill finished runner-up, going 33-flat. Hill, Kelsi Fouraker, Abby Fiegener and Lauren Parrish also teamed up for gold in the mile relay (4:37.3).

The HTRS girls scored 59 points for fourth place, beating the Lady Irish by 7 1/2 at the 10-team conference meet. Freshman Allie Binder ran a 12:27 two-mile, finishing 75 seconds ahead of the pack and ran a 5:47.2 mile, losing to Sterling’s Taylor Cockerill by about three seconds. Maggie Tomek finished third in both the 100 (:13.5) and 200 (:28.6) to propel the Lady Titans. Bailey Kuhlmann added a runner-up finish in the vault, going 8-6.
