The Falls City High cross-country teams traveled to Wildwood Lake last Thursday for the C-1 District Meet, and sent two runners to this week’s state competition in Kearney.
The girls finished fifth overall and were led by two-time state qualifier Lainey Larsen who finished runner-up in the district.
“This is Lainey’s second straight trip to Kearney,” FC Coach Cody Hawley said. “She ran an excellent race.”
The girls’ team came just fourpoints short of being a qualifying team at State.
Kyle Leafty led the Tiger boys to a 7th place team finish (18:18) and he, too, earned a trip to state, finishing third overall.
“He had an excellent kick at the finish to hold off a Neumann runner,” Hawley said. “The boys had a tough draw in this district and hoped to finish a couple team spots higher. I expect to see our district finish quite well at the State Meet.”
Larsen and Leafty run at the Kearney Country Club this Friday.
The Tiger boys and girls cross country teams each lose one runner to graduation in Brandon Gibson and Krystal Samqua, respectively.
“The kids have seen what it takes to get to the next level,” Hawley said. “Our expectations continue to grow and we hope to come back with another year of experience and compete at the highest level and get teams qualified for the state meet.”
