A 12-2 second quarter proved ruinous Thursday night, as Syracuse held off Falls City, 39-30, in the C1-1 subdistrict final at Beatrice High School.
The Lady Tigers held a one-point advantage in the first, third and fourth quarters – 10-10, 7-7 and 11-10 – but Syracuse took advantage of some Tiger miscues in the second frame and that proved to be the difference.
The Lady Tigers kept it close by converting 11 of 15 FT attempts (73 percent). Junior Baylee Vrtiska led FC in points with seven, while junior Sydney Armbruster and senior Brooke Scheitel each added six. Senior Madison Olberding chipped in five points and eight rebounds.
FC advanced past Johnson County Central last Tuesday with a 49-45 victory.
FC’s 11 victories marks the programs fifth-consecutive season with double-digit wins and head coach Max Milam, who took over the job from Jason Vitosh, has won 45 games in four seasons and is now tied with former head coach Mike Henderson in career victories at FC. Henderson won 45 games in six seasons from 2000 to 2006. Current Activities Director Darwin Palmer, who coached from 1993 to 2000, owns the record with 90 victories.
Scheitel and Olberding – FC’s lone seniors – combined for the fifth-best four-year win total in school history with 45 wins.
