Heavy rainfall throughout the Missouri River Basin has caused moderate flooding in Richardson County and surrounding areas, but forecasts from the National Weather Service in Omaha predict river levels to subside as early as Friday morning.
The NWS issued flood warnings Thursday morning for the Missouri River at Rulo, Brownville and Nebraska City, as well as the Big Nemaha River at Falls City. Also, Big Lake, MO, could be affected if the Missouri River levels reach 22 feet. Those warnings remain in effect for the eastern part of Richardson County until Saturday morning.
According to the NWS, the Missouri River at Rulo was at 22.85 feet at 1:30 p.m. Thursday and is expected to crest at 23.6 feet early Friday morning. Moderate flooding has occurred and should continue through Thursday night with levels dropping below the 17-feet flood stage at Rulo early Sunday afternoon.
The Big Nemaha River south of Falls City crested at 29.1 feet early Thursday morning and had fallen to 28.26 feet at 1:45 p.m. Flood stage for the Big Nemaha River is 27 feet.
Sources confirmed flooding along the Nemaha River from Falls City to Rulo, north of town near Muddy Creek and at multiple places along the Missouri River near Rulo.
According to the NWS, more rain is expected to fall in the area Thursday night and a 50 percent chance is forecast during the day Friday.
The NWS reminds drivers to “turn around, don’t drown” at areas where the water covers the road. Water depth may be too great to allow your vehicle to pass safely.
