Five gold medals, a silver and four bronzes proved to be the difference for the Douglas County West boys’ track team to hold off Falls City Sacred Heart and Sterling take home the team title of the Irish Invitational, held last Tuesday in Syracuse.
DC West tallied 91 points and edged hosts Sacred Heart by four points and Sterling by five. The Irish took home three golds, a pair of silvers and four bronze medals, while Sterling finished with three gold, two silver and five bronze.
A team championship for the Irish boys would have been their fifth in six events so far this spring.
In the ladies team portion, Omaha Christian Academy accumulated 85 points to hold off runner-up Pawnee City and third place Sterling by seven and 11 points, respectively. The Lady Irish were fourth with 67 points.
A boys-girls combined score was also kept and Sterling claimed first place with 160 points, followed by Sacred Heart’s 154 and Omaha Christian was third with 133 points.
Irish seniors Will Burenheide (110 hurdles) and Sean Strasheim (pole vault) and junior Chaz Dunn (800) were the lone first place medalists on the boys side. Senior Clay Finck ran to bronze in both the 100 and 200 and the Irish placed three in both the pole vault and triple jump events.
Maggie Goltz’ first place finish in the long jump proved to be the only gold on the girls side for FCSH. Goltz, who is just a freshman, claimed second in the triple jump and fifth in both the 200 and 400-meter runs. Sophomores Kelsi Fouraker (800) and Emily Rohrer (shot put) each earned a silver medal.
All six of the Irish relay teams finished fourth or better with the girls 3200-meter relay nabbing the fourth-place finish and the 400 and 1600-meter teams each finished third. The boys were second in both the 4×100 and 4×400 and third in the 4×800.
Sacred Heart was scheduled to travel to the Pawnee City Invitational today at 3 p.m., then wrap-up the regular season May 3 at the Tecumseh Invite.
