Thomas “Doc” Burton passed away on November 17, 2024 in his hometown of Falls City, NE. He was born July 29, 1926 in Falls City NE to Dr. M.U. Burton and Elisebeth (Gist) Burton.
Thomas graduated from Falls City High School in 1944. He proudly served 18 months in the United States Army from May 14, 1945 to October 21, 1946. After his military service, he attended Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri earning his Bachelor’s Degree in 1951. Tom later enrolled at Kansas State University, where he graduated as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1957.
On June 11,1955, Tom married Mary Ann McMullen at the Stella Community Church in Stella NE. Mary preceded him in death on September 2, 2012.
Known as “Doc Burton” to many in the Falls City farming community, Tom was a trusted and beloved veterinarian to call when farm animals or a family pet needed medical attention. Tom also worked regularly at the Falls City Sale Barn and the Hiawatha Auction on sale days.
Tom was an active member of his community. He served on the Falls City Council and the District 56 Falls City School Board for several years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Elks Lodge No. 963 and Legion Club Post No. 102.
Tom is survived by his children, Cindy (Tom) Kopf and Cece Simon of Falls City, Tom (Dana) Burton, Hardin, MO, Bob (Krista) Burton of Lincoln, NE, Tim (Mary) Burton of La Connor, WA, and foster son Richard (Susan) Burton of Lincoln, NE.
He is also survived by his grandchildren: Katie (Greg) Milius, Dan (Kristi) Simon, Nicole (Thomas) Georges, Mary Simon, Melissa White, Brian Kopf, Lisa (Dylan) Stoll, Julianne (Derek) Maze, Tommy (Allyson) Burton, Mathew (Sarenna) Burton, Abby Burton, Elly (Micah) Burton/Schumacher, Robert (Amanda) Burton, McLain Burton, Abram Burton, Preston Burton, Blake Burton, and Cali Burton. Additionally, he leaves behind 17 great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law, Jan McMullen and brother-in-law, Carl Hill and nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; sister, Betty June Kentopp and her husband Warren; brother, Dr. Robert Burton and his wife Judy; granddaughter, Hattie Burton in infancy; son-in-law Bill Simon; sister-in-law Eleanor Hill; and brother-in-law and Andy McMullen.
Tom (Doc) Burton will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, a cherished friend, and a dedicated veterinarian. His kindness and love will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
His memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at 3:00 PM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in Stella Cemetery. Military honors by Falls City Ceremonial Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.
