The Southeast Gun Club, Inc. is raising funds to build a 5 trap house range on the East side of the Falls City Jaycee’s Field south of Falls City. The amount to be raised is $150,000. The Falls City Jaycees has agreed to let the Gun Club build the range on their site. Additional ground needed to facilitate the project has also been approved by land owner Cory Snethen. All agreements will be long term (50 years or more).
The Range will be built to Amateur Trapshooting Association (www.shootata.com) specifications, which will add the possibility of holding ATA shoots. There are plans to hold weekly Men’s/Women’s leagues in the spring and fall of the year. The Club will have annual memberships available to purchase. This will allow a member to shoot at a reduced fee. The range will also be open to the public on to be determined times and available for rent for private events. The fee’s structure is under development at this time. The Falls City Trap Team will use the range for practicing for their shoots.
Along with the trap houses, a Clubhouse addition to the existing concession stand is also planned. The Clubhouse will be used during trap shoots for registration and a place for coaches, participants, and spectators to gather. It will also be used for Youth Hunter’s Education and Youth Bow Hunter’s Education. It could also serve as the site for local Concealed Carry classes among many other functions. Currently, the sport of trap shooting is one of the fastest growing sports among High School athletes. At the Cornhusker Trapshoot (www.cornhusker-trap.com) , held in Doniphan, Nebraska, they have set participant records for the last 4 consecutive years. The total number of shooters at the 2016 shoot was 2,584. The Falls City Trap Team currently has 25 participants, and hopes to grow with the addition of the new facility.
Clay Target Target shooting is the third fastest growing sport, 7.7 million people participated in target shooting in 1996; 3.7 million people participated in Trap and /or Skeet in 1996; 15.4 percent are between the ages 25 – 34. Average days of participation is 8.4.
There will be a donor board established with the following levels: Level Amount: 12 gauge $25,000 and over*; 16 gauge $10,000-$24,999; 20 gauge $5,000-$9,999; 28 gauge $1,000-$4999; 410 gauge $1-$999; *With a donation of $25,000 or more a traphouse will be named in the donor’s honor.
Members of the board hope to promote shooting sports in our area for both children and adults.
“Years ago there was a trap range with one house located in Falls City, and we would like to restart it,” said Ray Joy.
Board members include, Ray Joy, Shawn Fouraker, Brian Kirkdenall, Marc Morehead, Jim Jones, Kevin Taft and Ty Gilkerson. David Goff of the Falls City Jaycees is also working with the board.
The board is hoping to have the funds raised by the end of 2016; with completion of the project taking place in the summer of 2017.
