Sheldon Statewide Exhibition ‘Depicting Nature’ at FC Library & Arts Center’s Stalder Gallery

Sheldon Museum of Art’s 2014-15 Sheldon Statewide exhibition, “Depicting Nature: From the Scientific to the Sublime,” opens at Stalder Gallery inside the Falls City Library & Arts Center, 1400 Stone St., with a reception at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, hosted by the Richardson County Arts and Humanities Council. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.

The exhibition opens Thursday, March 5, and can be viewed during regular library hours: Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon. On view at the Stalder Gallery through April 5, the exhibition includes works of art that span 150 years, and range from early botanical studies to contemporary photography. Although varying in subject, style, and technique, the objects speak to the enduring fascination artists have with nature.

Approximately 20 works from the Sheldon’s permanent collection make up “Depicting Nature.” These include prints, photographs, and paintings by artists including Imogen Cunningham, Edward Weston, Dana Fritz, Albert Bierstadt, Seiko Tachibana, and Doug and Mike Starn.

Area teachers are invited to a free, hands-on workshop that makes connections between the exhibition and the recently adopted Nebraska visual arts standards from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at the FCL&AC. Participants will receive hands-on art-making experience and take-home curriculum resources. Lunch is included. For more information or to register, contact Mary Stoner at mary.stoner@unl.edu

Bus grants are available through the Nebraska Arts Council to assist with workshop participants’ expenses, but must be applied for immediately due to a four-week application deadline. For more information on bus grants, visit nebraskaartscouncil.org/grants
