Clifford D. Elwonger, 88, of Falls City, passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016 at Falls City. He was born March 28, 1927 at Dawson to the late Clarence and Alva (Wagner) Elwonger.
On April 5, 1955 he married Virginia Bippes at Falls City. She passed away Feb. 4, 2010.
Clifford was raised at Dawson and graduated from Dawson High School in 1946. Following graduation he worked construction in Nebraska City and, in 1951, enlisted in the Army. He was honorably discharged in 1953. Following his discharge, he moved to the Falls City area to do farm work for a couple of years. When married the couple established their home on the same farm. They moved into Falls City in 1956 and he worked for Frontier Homes as a sheet metal installer for nine years. He then became employed by the City of Falls City in the Water and Light Dept. as a lineman. Clifford retired in 1992.
He and Mrs. Elwonger were also church custodians for 40 years from 1957 until 1997. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church at Falls City.
Clifford is survived by his son, Martin (Jerri), of Falls City; daughters, Katherine Elwonger and Mary (Tom) Lunsford, both of Falls Cit; brother, Waldo (Marlene), of Sundance, WY; grandchildren, Matthew (Lori) Elwonger, of Kansas City, MO, Stephanie (Stephen) Lempsa, of Omaha, Justin (Abi) Elwonger, of Lincoln, and Andrea and Katelin Lunsford, both of Falls City; two great-grandchildren, with two on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Clarence, Dewey and Earl; sisters, Audrey Babcock and Beverly Smith.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016 at Bethel United Methodist Church, with Pastor Carla Shafer officiating. Interment at Steele Cemetery. Military graveside honors by Falls City Ceremonial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.
