GLADYS SCHULENBERG

Gladys Louise Schulenberg, 85, of Leavenworth, KS, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016 at St. Luke’s Hospice House, the day after her 85th birthday. She was born Jan 4, 1931 in Falls City, the third of nine children of Odin Kinnard and Ruth Evelyn (Robinson) Marteny.

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, husband Robert W. Schulenberg, in 1997, after more than a 25-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, during which she lovingly cared for him in their home.

Bud and “Glady” founded and operated Midwest Marine in Leavenworth with long-time friends Jim and Rose May and the late Frank and Evelyn Clark, until Bud’s illness. Subsequently, Glady retired in 1988, as a budget analyst with the Engineering Dept. at Ft. Leavenworth.

Glady and Bud were married for almost 50 years and are survived by their three children, Cindy (John) Lemke, and Bob (Jeed) Schulenberg, all of Leavenworth, and Brad (Jerrie) Schulenberg, of Kansas City, MO; she is also survived by her 10-year-old grandson, Alex Schulenberg, of Leavenworth; sister, Peggy Munoz, of Wellington, KS; brothers, Byron (Janice) Marteny, of Custer, SD, and Charles Marteny, of Falls City; five step-grandchildren; 13 step-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and others who knew and loved her as “Grandma Glady.”

Visitation was Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016 at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service was held Monday, Jan. 11 at the funeral home, with Rev. Tim Hutabarat as celebrant. Burial followed at Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery with her husband. Memorials are suggested to St. Luke’s Home Health and Hospice House of Kansas City, the Leavenworth Council on Aging, or St. Vincent Clinic.
