The Richardson County Courthouse last Wednesday hosted an open house to commemorate Nebraska’s 150th Anniversary, welcoming elementary school children from Falls City Public and FC Sacred Heart Schools. VIP’s Third Territorial Governor William A. Richardson (played by Gayle Swisegood) and J. Sterling Morton (Bruce Walker) were on hand, as were square dancers
Bill and Barb Ely and Nellie Ann Pfister. Refreshments were served and special displays decorated the hallways of the Courthouse. It was noted that the current Courthouse building was erected from 1922-25 at a cost of about $210,000, plus $10,000 for furnishings. It was last appraised in 2007 at $4.9 million. The history of Richardson County was on display for the Nebraska Sesquicentennial Celebration. Gov. Richardson, after whom the county is named, served from 1857 to 1859 and is one of four Nebraska governors to resided in Richardson County at one time or another. John H. Morehead was the 17th Governor of Nebraska from 1913-17, followed
by Arthur J. Weaver (23rd, 1929-31) and Dave Heineman (39th, 2005-15). The Sacred Heart fourth grade students in Jeff Barker’s classroom, as well as South School fourth graders taught by Danitra Dill, Tami DiGiacomo, Phil Janssen and Allison Mullins, provided special presentations
inside the District Courtroom on the third floor.
Folks also toured the former jail facility on the third floor, with most expressing relief upon the discovery that former County Commissioner Jim Sefried was, at long last, safely corralled by the iron bars.

District 56 School Superintendent Tim Heckenlively reported that ALICAP, the school’s risk liability pool insurance carrier, settled a claim filed by Teresa Chandler Pfister for a lump sum payment of $350,000.
Pfister brought the claim against the school district for an injury she suffered on school property in April of 2014. In related news, the BOE approved a bleacher replacement project at Falls City High’s McIntyre-Henderson Field House. The bleachers, which were installed when the gym was built in 1979, will be replaced in May-June of this spring. During the Jan. 9 regular meeting of the District 56 School BOE at the Central Office inside FC Middle School, Carroll Silva with Heartland Seating out of Shawnee, KS, presented information on the new bleachers, which will be electronically powered to open and close, an option not available when the current bleachers were installed nearly 38 years ago. Heartland Seating installed the new bleachers at Middle School, but the BOE, on Heckenlively’s recommendation, will wait to award a bid, as the superintendent said he expects another company to present a proposal in the near future.
In other BOE news:
—The Board accepted the resignation of longtime treasurer Eva Stark, who will retire May 31. Mrs. Stark worked for seven different superintendents in 35 years with FCPS and in August 2016 was named “Employee of the Year.” Heckenlively reported that he had received no other resignations or notices of retirement thus far in 2017.
—Board members kept the hiring incentive rate for new teachers at $3,000.
—Richard Malcolm was elected President of the Board for 2017, and June Bowers Vice President.
—A 2015-2016 Teacher Vacancy Survey was conducted in the fall of 2015 by the Nebraska Department of Education. Shortages in Nebraska include the following areas: Ag education, math, art, school counselors, business, marketing and information technology, school psychologists, early childhood education, science, special education, family and consumer science, speech pathologists, health or physical education, world language, and industrial tech.
“District 56 was fortunate to fill all vacancies in 2016-17 with fully qualified teachers,” Heckenlively said.
—The Superintendent annually prepares and distributes to the Board and the general public a written report which includes information required by Rule 10, Regulations and Procedures for the Legal Operations of Schools. The Annual Report will be made available to the community through distribution in the Falls City Journal.
—The BOE extended Heckenlively’s contract for two years.

It’s that time again! The Falls City Area Jaycees are seeking nominations to honor those who have shown outstanding leadership in and around the community in 2016.
On Page 3 of today’s Falls City Journal, a large nomination ballot is included to be used for nomination of persons to be recognized at the Monday, Jan. 16 Jaycees’ Distinguished Service Awards Ceremony held at the Elks Club.
Nomination forms may be emailed to Stefanie Wenz at swenz84@gmailcom and are available online at sites.google.com/site/fcjayceesdsa/
The Jaycees urge everyone to take some time to submit the names of those deserving of the appropriate awards. The Jaycees take great pride in recognizing those who excel in making the community a better place to live. The public’s input is essential in making the awards ceremony a success.
Following is a clarification of the specifics regarding the Distinguished Service Awards program:
Anyone is eligible for nomination, as noted in each category (see nomination ballot); nominees in each category are judged using a scoring and voting system with the winners receiving the best overall scores and/or votes; families and friends of the winners will be notified the week before the banquet to help arrange winners’ attendance.
When making your nominations, it is strongly recommended that you include a resume or letter of recommendation that fully describes your nominee’s accomplishments specifically in 2016, as well as past activities. Also, add reasons why you feel he/she is deserving of winning that particular award.
Every year the Jaycees host the annual DSA Ceremony with the primary purpose to recognize that the community of Falls City is blessed to have many wonderful individuals who make a real difference in people’s lives. This ceremony is our chance, as a community, to reflect on these gifts and celebrate volunteerism.
Mail DSA nominations, due by Thursday, Jan. 5, to: DSA Nominations, c/o Falls City Area Jaycees, P.O. Box 202, Falls City, NE 68355.

She was born on Feb. 9, 1953 to Marvin and Berdine Bauman.

Upon graduating from Peru State College with an education degree, Mary taught school for one year in Falls City and the next seven years at Tekamah-Herman Public Schools. That was followed by a successful 31-year career at Mutual of Omaha in the Information Tech Dept. She loved challenges, was committed to finding solutions to those challenges and inspired those around her to do the same. She loved sports; that included Nebraska football games. She loved to travel, having been to the UK, France, Belize, Mexico and the Hawaiian Islands many times with her husband and friends. Mary had the life philosophy to work hard but when it was time to have fun go all out and all out she did. She will be truly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mary is survived by her husband, Eldon Lindstrom, of Omaha; brothers, Merlin (Shirley) and Allan (Marcella) Bauman, all of Falls City; and nieces and nephews, Amy (Bill) Nussbaum, Matt (Julie) Bauman, Danelle (Matt) Cromer, Jennifer (James) Keller, Joe (Karrie) Bauman, and nine great-nieces and nephews, all of Falls City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Falls City. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, May 15, at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 7909 Mormon Bridge Rd., Omaha. A prayer service will begin at 6:30. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
