The Falls City High Wrestling team, eager to get back into competition after nearly a month break, performed well at last Friday’s Ashland-Greenwood tournament, where five FC wrestlers medaled, highlighted by Jeremy Zimmerman’s second-place finish.
Zimmerman, a junior at 285 pounds, won a major decision in the first round and reached the finals with a decision in the semifinals to set up his match with York’s number three-ranked heavyweight, Ronald Trevino, in the finals where Trevino pinned Zimmerman.
FC senior Chase Thompson started the day with a first period pin at 182 pounds, but lost in the semifinals. Thompson earned a pair of decisions as he battled back through wrestlebacks to claim third place.
Freshman Brody Smith, at 106 pounds, notched his first podium appearance placing third with a strong performance in the wrestlebacks. Smith won an 8-2 decision over Arlington in the consolations finals and posted bonus points for the team with a pin over Yutan’s Hinrichs in the consolation finals.
Fourth-seeded Morgen Valentine wrestled to a third-place finish at 138. The sophomore, who moved up from his 2013 state qualifying weight of 120 pounds, defeated the number two seed from A-G, 7-2, in the consolation finals.
Carter Hunzeker, a 170-pound freshman, battled well and rounded out the Tiger medalists with his fourth-place finish.
The Tigers will be in their first dual action of the season this Thursday in Sabetha, KS when they take on Sabetha and Maryville, MO beginning at 5:30 p.m. Satuday the Tigers return to Kansas for the Marysville Invitational which is slated for 9:30 a.m.
