Carol Kean

Carol Mae Elizabeth (Spier) Kean, 90, of Dawson, Nebraska, was born on December 14, 1929, in Steinauer, Nebraska, to Ferdinand and Marie (Eichenberger) Spier. She attended country school and graduated from Pawnee City High School with the class of 1947. After graduating, Carol began teaching in a country school, then took college courses to receive her teaching certificate at Peru State College.    

On November 30, 1957, Carol was united in marriage to Philip Kean at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dawson, Nebraska. Six children were born to this union: Don, Joy, Julie, Judy, Ron and Jon. The couple began their marriage raising their family on a farm 2 miles east of Dawson. While living in Dawson, Carol was a kindergarten teacher at Dawson public school for several years. She was a librarian and taught Story Hour at the John G. Smith Memorial Library in Dawson for many years. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother who cherished her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, raising poultry and embroidery. Carol passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2020, at the Falls City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Falls City, Nebraska, having reached the earthly age of ninety years, nine months and two days. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Carol is survived by her loving husband of sixty-two years Phil Kean of Dawson, sons: Don Kean and wife Bonnie of Falls City, Ron Kean of Belleville, WI; Jon Kean and wife Kellee of Salem, daughters: Joyce Huppert and husband Mark of Dawson, Julie Martinosky and husband Scott of Nebraska City, Judy Parrish and husband Doug of Falls City, 17 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Rose Kean of Stewartville, MN; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2020, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dawson, Nebraska, with Father Kenneth Hoesing officiating.

Visitation will be held from 1-8 p.m. on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at the Wherry Mortuary, 207 N. Nemaha Street, in Humboldt, Nebraska. Family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. at the mortuary.

Interment will be at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Dawson, Nebraska.
