JOHN COONCE

Former Rulo Mayor John Coonce, 73, of Rulo, passed away Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015 at Lincoln. He was born on June 8, 1942 at Rulo to the late Noah and Mary (Steinhauer) Coonce.

He was raised at Rulo and attended school at Rulo until the eighth grade, before graduating from Reserve (KS) High School in 1961. Following graduation he became employed at Falls City Creamery and then worked at Frontier Homes. He also helped farmers around the Rulo area. He became employed by the City of Falls City and worked at the water treatment plant, retiring in 1999 as the manager.

John enlisted in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge.

He married Edna Davolt at Hiawatha, KS, on Nov. 6, 1964.

In addition to serving as Rulo Mayor for many years, John also served as volunteer Fire Chief and was caretaker of the Rulo Cemetery for many years. He was an avid deer hunter and bingo player.

He is survived by his wife, Edna, of Rulo; sons, Jimmy (Melissa) Coonce, of Rulo, and Johnny (Cathy) Coonce, of Falls City; brother, William Coonce, of Rulo; sisters, Mary Lou Hill, of Falls City, Inez (Kenneth) Foster, of Dallas, and Mary Helen Croxton, of Powhattan, KS; grandchildren, Kraig, Jami, Bailey, Taylor and Jesse Coonce.

John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James, Robert, Ronald and Kenneth; sisters, Lula Hall, Bev Simpson, Ramona Eckley and Maxine Dannecker.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015 at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home, Falls City, with Pastor David Showalter officiating. Interment at Rulo Cemetery with military graveside honors by the Falls City Ceremonial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. www.dorrandclark.com
